BMW 1 Series vs Mercedes Benz A-Class
The BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class are two of the most popular premium family hatchbacks on the market. But which used buy should you choose between the two? They’re equally as popular and refined, both have quality German-derived engineering and are designed for ultimate performance.
So, to make it a bit easier for you, we’re going to break down both models to find out which is the better option for you.
Design
BMW 1 Series
The BMW 1 Series has three different trim levels on offer for customers; the SE, Sport and M Sport. M Sport is their sporty, high-performance version offering more aggressive looks such as performance brakes, and a dominant front grille.
Mercedes A-Class
As for the A-Class, you get SE, Sport and AMG Line trims. The AMG Line is very similar to the M Sport line from BMW, offering things such as larger wheels and lowered suspension to improve performance and give a more dynamic edge. The pin grille, sleek headlights and the Mercedes-Benz badge at centre stage make this a car you just can’t miss.
Interior
BMW 1 Series
One thing BMW is known for is its amazing build quality. Everything feels very solidly structured and built, however, older used models are beginning to show their age a little when it comes to the dashboard layout. It’s extremely basic, but if you prefer simplicity then this will be perfect for you.
You also get a 6-inch infotainment screen as standard which you control with a swivel wheel that’s easy to operate while you’re at a standstill or on the move.
Mercedes A-Class
The Mercedes A-Class interior is quite impressive compared to the BMW 1 Series. You get plush, expensive-looking materials throughout, unique chrome wind turbine-style air vents, and two digital screens; one for infotainment use and one for the speedometer. However, you do usually have to spend a little more to reap the benefit of the full-size 10.25-inch screens. Ambient lighting is also another upgrade that can be had, as well as the augmented reality satellite navigation to overlay graphics on an image of the road ahead so you can clearly see which route you’re supposed to take.
Practicality
BMW 1 Series
The BMW 1 Series offers up a 380-litre boot space and is a bit more spacious in the rear for passengers compared to the A-Class. and can comfortably seat three adults. If you want to fit a large rear-facing child seat, you’ll have to slide the front passenger side seat forwards, and there are flipper Isofix mounting point covers.
Mercedes A-Class
The A-Classes boot is approximately 10L larger than the BMW 1 Series and you can easily fit two large suitcases side by side with some extra luggage too. In the back, room is a little more restricted if you’re trying to fit three passengers, and where it is a little lower to the ground and the wheel arch is quite large, it can make getting in and out a little bit of a struggle. If you’re wanting to fit a child seat in the rear, the Mercedes A-Class Isofix points are uncovered making installing the seat a simple task.
What they’re like to drive
BMW 1 Series
If you’re an avid driver, the BMW 1 Series offers a better overall driving experience. It feels sporty, and you feel genuinely connected to the car while you’re driving. Suspension makes the ride very comfortable, and the 8-speed automatic gearbox are quick to respond to inputs and extremely smooth.
Mercedes A-Class
The Mercedes A-Class doesn’t feel as sporty to drive as the BMW 1 Series but is more comfortable and quieter. In terms of engines and fuel economy, BMW and Mercedes are fairly similar. Petrol versions of the Mercedes A-Class do brilliantly when it comes to mpg, proving you don’t need to buy a diesel to reap the rewards however the diesel variants can be a little noisier at higher speeds.
