When Is the Best Time to Buy a Car?

Does the time of year affect how much a car sells for?

The short answer is yes. Like with any other kind of sales, there are peak months of the year where the most sales will occur and quieter months. For car buyers, the price is an important factor when it comes to deciding which car to purchase

What is the best time of the year to buy a new car?

New reg releases

To get a better deal on your next car, you can shop around during March and September as this is when new number plates are issued. Dealerships are more likely to have saved their best offers for this period, and you could potentially be offered extras such as finance deposits and insurance.

At the end of each quarter

These months mark the end of each quarter, and deals could be on offer at these times to hit quarterly sales targets.

Towards the end of the tax year

The beginning of April marks the end of the tax year, which can incentivise dealerships to reduce any old stock to maximise sales before the new tax year begins.

What about used cars?

New reg releases benefit used car buyers too

While it’s true that these months can result in discounts for new cars, it’s also true that drivers will be selling their old vehicles to places like used car dealerships. These dealerships will also be selling these vehicles at reduced prices as there is likely to be more competition with other dealerships during this time.

April and October

If you’re not as specific about getting a certain make or model, shopping during these months could allow you to find the less-in-demand cars that sellers will want to move quickly. So you could benefit from more deals and price reductions.

You can also take advantage of the summer weather

Summer usually marks the beginning of good weather and holidays, so dealerships will likely be less busy, and you could see some discounts.

Consider buying “out of season”

Shopping for your specific car can also be beneficial when it’s “out of season”. For example, an SUV is more suited to winter weather and will likely be in demand during that time. So shopping for an SUV in the summer when they’re less desirable could mean you’ll see some price reductions.

The same can be said for more summery vehicles like convertibles. Shop around for them during the winter and keep an eye out for any bargains.
